Ditte Marie Frost

Ditte Marie Frost (b. 1992) is a visual artist who graduated from the Funen Art Academy in Odense (2015–2020), including an exchange year at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2018–2019). In 2022, she presented her first institutional solo exhibition at Platform, Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen. Her work has also been exhibited at Rundetaarn in Copenhagen and Cantina in Aarhus.

Working across sculpture, installation, and painting, Frost explores themes of transience and transformation. The motifs in her works are abstracted forms inspired by fictional creatures from science fiction, mythical beasts, plants, insects, and human and animal bodies.

Frost’s practice centres on the materials copper, steel, brass, and oil paint. She employs a process in which the canvas is chemically altered through the oxidation of metals before developing her imagery with oil paint directly onto the exposed surface.

Through the interplay of hybrid figurative forms and the patinated traces left by the metals, Frost creates visual spaces that oscillate between decay and creation. She is drawn to the chemistry of the process because it leaves traces that balance the unpredictable with the controlled. Her practice is rooted in the unknown and the obscured dimensions of our world, where life remains in a constant state of transformation despite the presence of darkness.
