Aleksandra Kucharska

Aleksandra Kucharska’s drawings exist in the space between memory and reality. Working in the soft tonal range of charcoal pencil, she creates images that gradually emerge from a haze of light and shadow. Her works capture not only the visible world, but also the moods and sensations that revolve around questions of home, time, and memory.


Kucharska’s practice is characterized by a quiet intensity, with both nature and the urban landscape serving as recurring subjects. Foliage, forest clearings, the reflection of light on the sea, patches of sunlight on a road, and building façades are motifs to which she continually returns. While the human figure is rarely present in her drawings, the human gaze is always implied. Her subjects are drawn from the everyday—fleeting moments that seem suspended somewhere between lived experience and dream.


The slow, meticulous process of making is central to Kucharska’s practice. Each drawing is built up through countless layers of charcoal pencil, allowing the image to emerge almost imperceptibly. Throughout this gradual process, the boundary between clarity and dissolution is constantly shifting.


Aleksandra Kucharska (b. 1981) received her MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Malmö, Sweden. She works primarily with drawing, while also incorporating sculpture and installation into her practice. Her work has been exhibited at Malmö Konsthall, Galleri Arnstedt, Liljevalchs in Stockholm, Växjö Konsthall, Hallands Konstmuseum, and the Drawing Museum (Teckningsmuseet) in Laholm.


Her work is represented in numerous public collections, including Malmö Art Museum, the Swedish Public Art Agency (Statens konstråd), Borås Art Museum, Hallands Konstmuseum, Helsingborg Museum, and the City of Stockholm. Kucharska has received several prestigious grants and awards, including the Ellen Trotzig Fund (Malmö Art Museum), the Claes Bäckström Memorial Fund (Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts), the Malmö Konsthall Foundation (1931), the Åke Andrén Foundation, as well as project grants and working grants from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee (Konstnärsnämnden).
