Agnete Bertram

Agnete Bertram (b. 1983) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2008. Her works are represented in the collection of the Danish Arts Foundation. In 2023, she received the Sonja Ferlov Mancoba Honorary Grant.

Agnete’s practice revolves around abstract painting as a site for exploring rhythm, materiality, and movement. The brushstroke—its direction, repetition, and texture —serves as a source of sustained inquiry and immersion.


Textiles play a central role in her work, creating connections to communities of women image-makers across time and space. Yarn becomes a language for the unseen and the forgotten, and a portal to both the past and the future. Her works weave together references to the wallpaper in her great-grandmother’s home, to vases that momentarily hold nature in trust, and to everything that has yet to take shape.


For Agnete, the imaginative is not an escape, but the most tangible reality. Abstraction becomes a way of giving form to what cannot be expressed by any other means.
